「ヴェニスの商人」でアントーニオの商船が難破、アントーニオは借金返済の当てがなくなる。彼に恨みを持っていたシャイロックは、証文をたてに彼を罠に陥れようとします。
「期限までに金が返せない時は、アントーニオの身体から肉１ポンドをもらい受ける。」
夫の親友の危機を知り、ポーシャ姫は法律家に化けて裁判所に乗り込み、彼女の機転によってアントーニオは救われるのです。その中の一節が
「慈悲は強いられるべきものではない。恵みの雨のごとく、天よりこの下界に降り注ぐもの。そこには二重の福がある。与える者も受ける者も共にその福を得る。これこそ、もっとも大なるものの持ちうる最も大なるもの、王者にとって王冠よりもふさわしいシルシとなろう・・・・」
